Half head highlights are a brilliant way to lift and brighten your colour without going fully blonde all over. We place fine foils through the top and sides to add lighter ribbons, soften regrowth, and bring more light around the face, while keeping depth underneath for a natural, easy to wear finish.

Your appointment is calm and thorough, with a proper consultation first, then careful sectioning and placement to suit how you wear your hair day to day. We can finish with a toner to refine the shade and add shine, followed by a polished blow dry so you leave feeling put together, not overdone.

More information

What your Half Head Highlights appointment includes

Half head highlights focus on the areas you see most, so you get a brighter result with a softer, more manageable grow out.

  • A consultation to agree your goal, how bright you want to go, and what will suit your base colour.
  • Highlights placed through the top, sides, and around the parting for visible lightness and dimension.
  • Thoughtful placement to keep some natural depth underneath, so the colour looks blended rather than stripy.
  • Lightening done with hair condition in mind, with realistic advice if your hair needs a gentler approach.
  • Toning where needed to reduce brassiness, cool down warmth, or create a creamy, lived in finish.
  • A finished style, so you can see the colour placement and how it moves in the light.

Half head highlights for brighter colour without going all over

Half head highlights are ideal if you want to look lighter and fresher, but still want your hair to feel like you. They work well if you wear your hair down, in a ponytail, or with a parting you want to brighten, and they are especially useful if you want a softer transition as your roots grow.

This service can also be a good step if you are moving towards lighter hair gradually, or if you want to break up a solid colour and add dimension.

How the Half Head Highlights service runs, from consultation to finish

Plan for around 2 hours 15 minutes. We start by talking through your colour history, your ideal shade, and how much maintenance you want, then we section the hair and apply foils through the half head area.

Once the highlights have lifted to the right level, we rinse and assess the tone. If needed, we apply a toner to get the shade looking clean and wearable, then finish with styling so you can see the result properly. If you are new to colour, or it has been a while since your last colour appointment, we may ask you to pop in for a quick patch test beforehand.

Aftercare and maintenance for clean, blended grow out

To keep highlights looking fresh, use a colour friendly shampoo and conditioner and book in for regular trims if your ends need it. If you tend to go warm, an occasional purple shampoo can help, but we will guide you on how often to use it so the tone stays soft.

Most people refresh half head highlights every couple of months, with a toner top up in between if the colour needs it. We will help you choose a schedule that fits real life in Grange Park and Northampton, not a high maintenance routine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are half head highlights?
Half head highlights lighten the top and sides of the hair, rather than the whole head. You get visible brightness and dimension, while keeping depth underneath for a more natural finish.
Will half head highlights look blended as they grow out?
They can, especially when the highlights are finely placed and the tone is chosen carefully. We focus on a soft transition at the root and a shade that suits your base colour, so regrowth feels less harsh.
Do I need a toner with half head highlights?
Not always, but toning often makes the difference between hair that is simply lighter and hair that looks polished. A toner can cool down brassiness, add warmth on purpose, or create a more creamy, balanced blonde.
How often should I have half head highlights redone?
Many clients refresh half head highlights every 8 to 12 weeks, depending on how fast their hair grows and how bright they go. If you like a softer look, you may be able to leave it longer and top up with a toner in between.
Do I need a patch test for highlights?
A patch test is sometimes needed for colour services, even for highlights, depending on your history. If required, we will ask you to pop in ahead of time and we will explain exactly what to do and when.
